TRASH FACTS

The resident of a single-family property and a designated person
of any multiple family property are responsible for:

  1. the removal of trash containers from the public right of way after trash collection.
  2. the removal of trash from the property and from the sidewalks or alleyways.
  3. keeping of all sidewalks clear of snow and ice.

Garbage should be drained of moisture and placed in trash bags that are securely closed. This garbage must be placed in metal or
plastic containers. These containers must be covered with
a watertight lid.

The owner of a residential property, whether occupied by the owner or by renters, is responsible for providing at least one covered metal or plastic container for trash for each individual dwelling
unit.

All trash containers must be placed out for collection before 6:00 a.m. the day of collection, but not before 6:00 p.m. of the day before collection. These containers must be removed the same day of the
collection. Certain exemptions may be granted by the City.

After garbage collection, remember that all containers must be placed along the side of the house, 5 ft. back from the front facade, or in the rear.

Collection day for residents east of I-95 will be on Monday and Thursday. For residents west of I-95, collection will be Tuesday and Friday.

Property owners are responsible for keeping the alleyway in the rear or side of the house free of trash and weeds. If there is a common alleyway, both property owners are reponsible for the
maintenance.

Special pick-ups of large bulk items (furniture, appliances, etc.) may be scheduled by calling 576-3878.

It is illegal to put garbage in any street, public place, park, vacant lot, alley, or private property for any reason other than scheduled trash collection.

Grass and weeds must be kept below 8 inches in height.

Anyone who owns or occupies a business in the City is responsible for keeping the sidewalk and curbs free of litter.

It is not permitted to post any notice, poster, or other paper or device to any lamppost, traffic signal, traffic equipment post, public utility pole, tree, or public structure or building.

Sponsored by the City of Wilmington and the Clean Wilmington Committee.
