Norman D. Griffiths: Council Member 2nd District

Councilman Norman D. GriffithsNorman D. Griffiths was first elected to City Council representing the 2nd District in 1992. He was re-elected in 1996, 2000 and 2004.

Norman has been an attorney in the DuPont Legal Department since 1983. He is currently a corporate counsel serving as the commercial counsel for DuPont’s Titanium Technologies business unit.

Norman received his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from American University in Washington, D.C. in 1980 and his juris doctorate degree from the Catholic University Columbus School of Law in 1983.

His community and civic involvement includes roles on a number of non-profit boards including the Board of Trustees of Delaware Technical and Community College; the Board of Directors of Westside Health, Inc.; the Board of Directors of the Delaware Community Foundation, the Board of Directors of the Wilmington Economic Development Corporation (“WEDCO”) and Norman chairs the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League. Norman is also a member of the Delaware State Bar Association’s Multicultural Judges and Lawyers’ Section.

Norman is a member of the bars of the State of New Jersey and Washington D.C. and has limited admission to the Delaware Bar. Norman enjoys working around his home and working with the civic associations in his District.

He is most proud of the fact that all four of his children have graduated from college and along with his wife, all have degrees and two of his children have obtained or are pursuing post-graduate degrees. "I have seen first hand the value of education in a person’s life and will continue to support policies that enhance the educational prospects for all our young people."

Wilmington is developing into a truly great city. Others outside Wilmington are seeing this and moving here. City government must be dynamic and visionary in order to address a multitude of issues that will affect the future of our city. While government should provide certain essential services to residents and visitors, we need to also empower people to take action themselves to protect their neighborhoods and prevent the deterioration of the quality of life that can easily occur if the negative element in our society perceives that people don’t care. Joining civic associations, participating in recycling, helping and looking out for neighbors, keeping your community clean are all steps that we can do ourselves to make Wilmington the great City that it has the potential to become.
