Fire Marshal's Office
Deputy Chief George F. Cunningham, Jr.
Fire Marshal

FIRE PREVENTION DIVISION

The Fire Marshal’s Office is responsible for developing and implementing special fire safety programs. The specialty programs are designed to promote public fire safety messages and to provide a positive department presence in the community. Our official mascot, Sparky, works with the Risk Watch Program for Grades K-6 providing fire prevention education. In coordination with the Fire Chief, The Fire Prevention Division also assists with department-related media releases and conferences.

FIRE PREVENTION

Under the direction of the City of Wilmington Revised Statutes and Codes, the Fire Chief is required to provide fire protection for the City of Wilmington. In addition to fire fighting, fire protection includes a wide range of fire prevention measures including the formulation and adoption of fire codes, inspections to insure compliance with the codes, investigations to determine the causes of fires, and education of the public regarding fire safety. The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for carrying out these duties for the Fire Chief.

CODE ENFORCEMENT

The primary responsibility is the enforcement of the fire regulations. The FMO office also investigates complaints, answer questions from the public, and assists the Fire Education section with requests for fire safety training when necessary.

FIRE EDUCATION

The primary responsibility is to develop and implement programs that will increase the public's awareness of fire safety. Educating the public in matters of fire safety is considered essential to fire prevention. Call 576-3129 to request a group safety presentation.
