The Department of Public Works provides
a variety of services which touch the daily lives of all city residents
and a substantial portion of New Castle County residents. Officials
in the department are responsible for each of the following areas:
Public Property
Cleaning and securing vacant city-owned property,
managing services for the City/County building in cooperation with
New Castle County officials.
Sanitation
Workers collect east of I-95 on Mondays and Thursdays,
and west of I-95 on Tuesdays and Fridays, except for holiday and
inclement weather, when the schedule is moved back one day. Trash
left for collection must be stored in water-tight metal or plastic
containers with lids. Trash may not be placed on sidewalks before
6 P.M. on the evening before a scheduled pickup. A special arrangement
must be made by calling 576-3878 for city pickup of items other
than normal household trash.
Street Cleaning
Responsible for sweeping of City streets, leaf
loading from October through November, snow and ice control.
Call to arrange neighborhood clean-ups at 576-3076.
Street and Sewer Maintenance
Responsible for street cleaning and related repairs,
such as potholes on city-owned streets and highways, catch basin
cleaning and rodent control (baits nearby catch basins).
Transportation
The Transportation Division is responsible for
transportation policy and planning, the development and programming
of transportation improvements, the installation of traffic signals
and signs, the issuing of permits, and the operation of City streets,
including street lights, parking meters, and line striping.
Automated Meter Reading
(AMR) Program
The City of Wilmington has begun another phase
in improving customer service delivery to each water customer, our
Automated Meter Reading (AMR) Program. Soon, we will be in your
neighborhood to install your free new meter with an automated reading
device or retrofit your existing meter. There will be no cost for
installation of this equipment.
Wastewater Treatment Plant
Officials in this division operate this $250 Million
regional wastewater treatment facility, and collect, store, treat
and distribute over 10 billion gallons of water for customers in
the city, most of New Castle County, and a portion of Pennsylvania.
