Maria Cabrera was elected on November 6, 2012, as a Wilmington City Council Member At Large. She is an independent business woman, head of household, and mother of four. On November 15, 2012, by way of Resolution #12-077, Ms. Cabrera was appointed to fill the vacated At Large seat for the unexpired term of the 105th Council Session. On January 8, 2013, she will be sworn in as City Council Member At Large for the 106th City Council Session.

Councilwoman Cabrera employment history includes working in the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs under former Mayor James H. Sills, Jr., and as Director of Education & Community Relations for the Grand Opera House. Currently she is a restaurateur, and owns a marketing firm. For the past 23 years that she has lived and worked in Wilmington, Councilwoman Cabrera has built strong strategic partnerships with leaders throughout Delaware and has demonstrated effective leadership and community service as a member of over 15 boards and committees.

Councilwoman Cabrera will step up and address the issues that she and Wilmingtontonians care about, and will try to influence public policy, laws and regulations that effect the citizens of Wilmington. She is just as concerned about the seemingly never-ending onslaught of crime in our neighborhoods, rolling bypass of our firehouses, economic development plans that give breaks to the big guys and the increased costs to the little guys, and with no job creation for the people in the adjacent neighborhoods, the seeming perpetual crisis in the finance department, etc.

"It's going to take a lot of hard work and people willing to step into the fire, work hand in hand with the community and listen to their concerns. It's going to take effective leaders that are willing to take the necessary steps, no matter how difficult [it is] to get to the root of the problem, research, develop and implement!"
