On Sunday, February 10th, 2008 at approximately 12:30 a.m., Wilmington Police attempted to stop a vehicle that was driving recklessly in the City’s Hilltop area. When officers were able to stop the vehicle in front of the St. Francis Hospital, they realized that the driver, a 24 year old male from New Castle was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers were immediately able to get the driver into the hospital where he was stabilized and then transported to the Christiana Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.
According to the victim, he was shot in the parking lot of the BP gas station located at MLK Boulevard and West Street by an unidentified male wearing all black clothing. At that time, the victim could not provide any further information.
At the time the officers were assisting the victim, they observed a black .45 cal semi automatic handgun on the driver’s side floor of the victim's Buick Century which had several bullet holes in the driver’s door. The gun was found to be loaded. As the victim was being treated, assisting officers located a shooting scene in the area of 2nd & West Streets which was the original location of a shots fired complaint just minutes prior to locating the victim.
Yesterday, Monday February 11, 2008, the victim, 24-year-old Lamont Stevenson of the unit block of Revelle Street in New Castle was released from the Christiana Hospital and turned over to federal authorities as a violator of the FED-UP program as he was a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
The shooting investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Wilmington Police Detective Mike Gifford at 302-576-3640
