Wilmington Man Shot in the Leg

This evening (Wednesday, January 27, 2010) at approximately 8:27 p.m., Wilmington Police officers on patrol heard what appeared to be gun shots coming from the area of 5th & Madison Streets. The officers responded to investigate, but did not locate a scene or victim. After several minutes, dispatchers advised that a gunshot victim had arrived at the St. Francis Hospital via private vehicle. There, officers interviewed a 32 year old Wilmington man suffering from a single gunshot wound to his right leg. He stated that he was at 5th & Madison Streets talking with a friend inside of his car when an unknown man approached the driver’s door.  The subject advised the victim to “give it up” and pointed a handgun at him. The suspect subsequently fired several shots, striking the victim once in the leg. He (victim) then drove himself to the hospital. He was listed in good condition.

The suspect was described only as a black male.

The investigation is continuing.
