DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival

Celebrating its 30th year as the largest FREE jazz festival on the East coast

This week-long festival is an annual tribute to the late jazz trumpeter and Wilmingtonian Clifford Brown, who was born in 1930 on the east side of the city. Also known as ‘Brownie,’ he died in 1956 at the age of 25 in a car accident, leaving behind only a few years’ worth of recordings. Brown had a considerable influence on later jazz trumpet players, including Sandoval, Donald Byrd, Lee Morgan, Booker Little, and Freddie Hubbard. Brown wrote two compositions, "Joy Spring" and "Daahoud", which have become jazz standards.

Jazz Festival Week continues this evening on Rodney Square's Main Stage with:

Matthew Whitaker
Laila Biali
Clifford Brown Tribute Big Band under the direction of Gerald Chavis featuring Ernie Watts
