Every Wilmington neighborhood deserves to be clean, and working together toward this goal improves our self-image and our shared future. Mayor Purzycki’s Beautiful City Initiative is a consistent, sustained effort by City government and the community to keep Wilmington clean.

The Beautiful City Initiative involves:

  • Cleaning the gateways before sunrise:
    • Lancaster Avenue
    • 4th Street
    • Maryland Avenue
    • Northeast Boulevard
    • Church Street
    • Vandever Avenue
    • Pennsylvania Avenue
    • Concord Avenue
    • Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard
  • Deploying more hand cleaning crews for greater attention to sidewalks, trees, grass, and utilities.
  • Distributing and requiring the use of new and free trash bins to residential properties citywide in spring 2018. The bins can be lifted by trucks, improving worker safety and speeding up service.
  • Promoting proper trash and recycling methods to increase recycling rates from 20% to above 30%.
  • Improving landscaping and maintenance for:
    • Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard
    • Delaware Avenue
    • Northeast Boulevard at 12th Street
    • 11th Street between Spruce and Church Streets
    • Concord Avenue and Broom Street
    • South Market Street from A Street to Howard Street
    • D Street at Heald Street
  • Reviving Adopt-A-Block, through which organizations and individuals help keep an area clean.
  • Improving the process for removing dead or damaged trees from public areas.
  • Using water flusher trucks to clean streets more often.
  • Improving illegal dumping enforcement.
  • Replacing missing or worn street signs.
  • Repainting crosswalks and stop bars.
  • Repainting fire hydrants.
