Largest FREE jazz festival on the East Coast goes virtual
The tradition continues in Wilmington as the 33rd Annual Clifford Brown Jazz Festival is being held virtually as the city follows Governor Carney's directive on fighting COVID-19 by practicing social distancing.
Watch the festival featuring this evening's performances by the Gerald Chavis Quintet featuring Carol Riddick, the Mike Boone Quartet featuring Mekhi Boone, The Barbara Walker Story, and Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead:
The festival is an annual tribute to the late jazz trumpeter and Wilmingtonian Clifford Brown, who was born in 1930 on the East Side of the city. Also known as ‘Brownie,’ he died in 1956 at the age of 25 in a car accident, leaving behind only a few years’ worth of recordings. Brown, whose compositions, "Joy Spring" and "Daahoud", have become jazz standards, has had a considerable influence on later jazz trumpet players.
