VACANCY: Department of Public Works (Street Cleaning Division)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a high school or GED with experience in the operation of complex construction and maintenance equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

REQUIREMENT(S): Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug test. Possess and maintain a valid “CDL” Class “B” driver’s license with an active medical examiner’s certificate, a good driving record, and ability to pass drug screening as mandated by the Federal Department of Transportation for CDL drivers; tanker endorsement preferred.

NATURE OF WORK PERFORMED: Performs semi-skilled work in the operation of standard trucks, tractors, riding lawn mowers, push mowers, and other tree excavation equipment. The work of this class involves responsibility for continuous, safe, and efficient operations of automotive, construction equipment in performing such tasks as transporting men, and materials to and from job sites. Some positions in this class may require the performance of manual labor in loading and unloading material or other related tasks. This work may also involve exercising supervisory control over a small group of unskilled workers, and may require overtime for special events.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (Illustrative Only: Operates pickups, dump or platform trucks in hauling sand, gravel, or hazardous materials for Public Works projects. Loads and transports maintenance materials and equipment. May operate dump truck for spreading cinders or salt, clearing streets of snow, or solid waste. Washes and performs preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles. Transports men and materials to various job sites. Does related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of traffic laws involved in the operation of automotive equipment and construction related vehicles. Knowledge of City street layout. Knowledge and experience in supervising small work crews. Ability to operate automotive and related construction equipment safely and efficiently. Ability to detect operating defects in automotive equipment. Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time. Ability to understand oral and written instructions. Must be able to work in inclement weather.

RESIDENCY: City residency required within six months of employment.
