VACANCY: Department of Parks and Recreation (Maintenance Division)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and some experience in supervisory responsibility and considerable labor or equipment operator experience in various public works or park maintenance projects; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
REQUIREMENT(S): Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug test. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
NATURE OF WORK PERFORMED: The work of this class involves assigning, supervising, and coordinating relatively small crews of laborers, maintenance men, and equipment operators performing routine and repetitive duties. This employee frequently participates in the work being performed. This individual must utilize labor, material, and equipment in an efficient manner to facilitate proper and economic performance of the assigned tasks. Work assignments require operation of power saws, drills, and other mechanical hand tools used in the building trades. Confers with supervisor on time, materials, supplies and methods for repair and maintenance projects.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (Illustrative Only): Supervises, assigns and frequently participates in the work of laborers engaged in the preservation and maintenance of City park buildings, playground equipment, swimming pools, and park amenities. Makes park signs, repairs concrete and masonry work to sidewalks, steps, buildings, etc. Painting park benches, buildings, and swing sets. Performs inspections of parks equipment. Responsible for fountain maintenance. Problem solve and troubleshoot when complex issues arise.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques used in park maintenance activities and construction building trades including masonry, painting, carpentry, and plumbing. Good knowledge of effective supervisory techniques and practices. Good knowledge of the geography and layout of the City. Ability to plan, direct, and supervise the work of a group of laborers, equipment operators, and other employees. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Knowledge of ground maintenance practices. Ability to understand and carry out oral or written instructions. Ability to maintain simple records and prepare simple reports. Ability to lift or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
RESIDENCY: City residency required within six months of employment.
