VACANCY: Department of Public Works (Street Cleaning Division)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or GED equivalency with experience in the operation of complex maintenance equipment; 2 or more years experience operating a front end loader, backhoe, and mechanical sweeper or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability.

REQUIREMENT(S): Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug test. Possess and maintain a valid “CDL” Class “B” driver’s license with an active medical examiner’s certificate, Tanker endorsement, a good driving record, and ability to pass drug screening as mandated by Federal Department of Transportation for CDL drivers. Must be able to work shift work, standby, or overtime as needed.

NATURE OF WORK PERFORMED: The work in this class involves assisting or performing as acting supervisor in coordinating and training small crews of laborers in performing routine and repetitive duties. This employee will operate various types of moderately complex maintenance equipment and frequently participates in the work performed. Work assignments require operation of lower classification equipment and perform preventive maintenance on such equipment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (Illustrative Only): Operates backhoe, front-end loader, mechanical sweeper, leaf loader, truck, flusher, and dump truck. Trains small crew of unskilled workers, clean up oil spills, respond to special complaints relating to unmarked hazardous materials, dead animals, poison ivy, bed bugs, and similar items as part of the duties. Assist in setting up City special events, snow removal, and flood coordination. Performs all related work as required by the supervisor.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Skilled in operating front end loader, backhoe and mechanical sweeper. Good knowledge of supervisory techniques and practices. Thorough knowledge of the methods of operating related heavy equipment. Knowledge of traffic laws, and City street layouts. Ability to operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently. Ability to detect defects in equipment. Ability to make minor repairs to equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Skilled in the removal of hazardous solid waste and refuse. Ability to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds.

RESIDENCY: City residency required within six months of employment.
