VACANCY: Department of Public Works (Water Distribution)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and some experience in performing heavy manual work at the General Laborer II levels and in use of hand tools requiring some manual dexterity; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

REQUIREMENT(S): Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug test. Must obtain a Driver’s License (Class D) prior to the completion of the 90-day probationary period and maintain the license with a good driving record while in this position. Required to work standby at various times. May be required to work overtime as needed.

NATURE OF WORK PERFORMED: Performs manual work in a variety of tasks, which frequently involve the use of acquired skills; may often require a continuous application of physical strength and endurance. Work involves the performance of heavy and light manual labor or a variety of semi-skilled tasks and occasionally includes lead work or responsibilities. Work is usually performed under the direct supervision of a Labor Foreman who issues general orders on routine jobs and specific instructions when departures are made from established procedures. Work is subject to review in progress and upon completion. However, depending on the work location, employees may be assigned individual tasks that are checked upon completion.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (Illustrative Only): Manually excavate job sites, repair water mains, water service lines, and fire hydrants. Operates a rotator, air compressor, generator, jackhammer, or power tools. Performs tasks in a variety of trade areas not requiring advanced skills. Reads some complex drawings and/or blueprints. Uses tools and operates equipment not requiring a lengthy learning period or complex skills. May occasionally perform lead worker supervisory responsibilities of a small crew. Performs pipefitting duties. Performs all related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Possess a basic knowledge of excavation of restorations of water distribution system. Possess general knowledge of pipefitting skills and related equipment. Knowledge and ability to operate related construction equipment. Ability to perform semi-skilled manual tasks without close supervision. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to comprehend complex drawings or blueprints. Ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance. Ability to lift or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Skill in the use and care of hand tools. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

RESIDENCY: City residency required within six months of employment.
