VACANCY: Department of Parks and Recreation (Maintenance Division)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or a GED equivalency; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
REQUIREMENT(S): Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical and drug test.
NATURE OF WORK PERFORMED: Performs manual work of a routine nature usually requiring considerable physical strength and endurance. The work of this class involves performing both heavy and light physical labor and assisting in the performance of semi-skilled tasks. Employee generally works as a member of a crew under close supervision by a foreman. However, depending on the work location, employee may be assigned individual tasks that are checked upon completion.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (Illustrative Only): Performs a wide variety of semi-skilled work in parks and recreational facilities; maintains lawns and plants; assists in gardening and nursery work. Digs ditches using pick and shovel. Sands icy pavements by hand or with mechanical spreader. Cuts grass with a small hand or rider mower. Opens clogged catch basins and removes dirt and debris. Uses tools and equipment not requiring complex skills. Occasionally performs cleaning and messenger duties. Performs all related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Some knowledge in the use of various small equipment or tools. Ability to lift heavy articles and perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time. Ability to understand and follow simple oral instructions. Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees. Ability to perform manual tasks without close supervision.
RESIDENCY: City residency required within six months of employment.
