VACANCY: Department of Public Works (Building Services Division)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Completion from high school, Vo-tech or GED equivalency and some experience in the building mechanical trades or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
REQUIREMENT(S):Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug test. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Must be able to work overtime as needed.
NATURE OF WORK PERFORMED: Performs manual work in a variety of tasks, which frequently involve the use of acquired skills; may often require a continuous application of physical strength and endurance. Work involves the performance of heavy and light manual labor or a variety of semi-skilled tasks such as custodial, work on the grounds, set up of holiday lights, banners and signs; assist with installing equipment used for concerts and special events in the City and assists the Building Foreman and/or the Building Tech I. May include lead worker responsibilities at times. Work is usually performed under the direct supervision of a Building Foreman and/or Building Technician I who issues general orders on routine jobs and specific instructions when departures are made from established procedures. Work is subject to review in process and upon completion. However, depending on the work location, employee may be assigned individual tasks that are checked upon completion.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (Illustrative Only): Assist in setting up and maintaining electric lights, banners and other holiday and special events materials. Assist with inspecting, repairing, and maintaining city-owned buildings. Assist in removing walls, change interior lay-out of office areas and other buildings, and routinely operates lifts and bucket trucks. Performs all related work as required such as snow removal.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of electric, carpentry and related building trades, preferred. Ability to operate hand and power tools, follow written and oral instructions, to lift or move object up to 100 pounds and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the general public.
RESIDENCY: City residency required within six months of employment.
