SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS

VACANCY: Department of Police
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or GED equivalency. At least one (1) year of public contact work experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities of public contact work.
REQUIREMENT(S): Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug test. Possession of a valid driver’s license, a good driving record, and reliable transportation is preferred.
NATURE OF WORK PERFORMED: Limited service, year-round guard duty involving the direction of traffic at intersections in the vicinity of grade schools and public parks. An employee in this class is responsible for the efficient and conscientious performance of their duties in order to afford maximum protection to children going to and returning from school and public parks. Work is performed under periodic supervision and reviewed by superiors through personal inspections and appraisal of the effectiveness of services rendered.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (Illustrative Only): Controls traffic by hand or traffic lights at designated crossings to allow children to cross safely. Determines movement of traffic when traffic signals are not controlling, and remains alert to prevent children from attempting to cross the street when traffic is moving. Performs all related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Some knowledge of traffic regulations. Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather throughout the year. Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others. Ability to remain alert at all times and to act quickly and objectively in emergencies. Ability to learn applicable departmental rules and regulations. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors and the public.
RESIDENCY: City residency required within six months of employment.
