200 youth employment positions remain unfilled; applicants have until April 29 to seek a summer job

The City of Wilmington’s Parks and Recreation Department is looking for young people to fill nearly 200 summer jobs. While applications have been available for several weeks, younger citizens are not applying in the numbers they have in previous years. According to the Department, 450 jobs are available for applicants between the ages of 14 and 20 years old, but only 250 people have applied thus far, leaving 200 jobs still available.

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki and Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Kelley are urging young people and their families to pick up an application form today. Summer employment opportunities are being offered in two, eight-week sessions that span from June 19 through August 25.

Applications are available online at or at the following locations:

  • Parks and Recreation Turner Building on Wilmington Avenue
  • The Williams “Hicks” Anderson Community Center on Madison Street
  • West End Neighborhood House on Lincoln Street
  • Kingswood Community Center on Bowers Street
  • PAL Center on Market Street

Applicants must include copies of their photo identification, their social security card, birth certificate, proof of address and proof of a guardian’s income. Applicants who are 17 years of age and under must also complete a Delaware Department of Labor Work Permit. Those who apply will be assigned a lottery number upon submission of their complete registration materials. All jobs are being selected impartially through a televised lottery that will be held on June 3 on WITN, Channel 22.

Applicants who need assistance with their forms can go to the Parks and Recreation Department on Monday, April 24 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; to the West End Neighborhood House on Tuesday, April 25 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; to the Parks and Recreation Department on Wednesday, April 26 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; to the Kingswood Community Center on Thursday, April 27, also from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and to the Parks and Recreation Department on Saturday, April 29 from 9 a.m. to Noon or to the PAL on Market Street on Saturday, April 29 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
