Mayor Purzycki Announces Weekend of Activities with Eagles Super Bowl Champion and Wilmington Native Wendell Smallwood

Wendell Smallwood Weekend will be held May 17-19 featuring a FREE pro football camp for youths as well as a Friday happy hour and comedy show, Saturday party with a purpose and a Sunday brunch at the Queen; #WeetWeekend

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki today announced the City’s inaugural Wendell Smallwood Weekend in Wilmington, which will be held from May 17th through 19th, 2019, and will feature five events with the Super Bowl Champion over three days. The Mayor said Wilmington native Wendell Smallwood of the Philadelphia Eagles will continue to give back to his community through a series of events that will raise funds to support a non-profit that serves Wilmington’s young people.

“On behalf of everyone in Wilmington, I express my thanks and appreciation to Wendell for all that he has done and continues to do for the City of Wilmington,” said the Mayor.  “He is a fierce competitor on the field, but within his home City, Wendell has demonstrated time and again that he is a humanitarian with a huge heart. We are very excited to work together with Wendell on this special event-filled weekend.”

“Wilmington is my hometown, and will always have a special place in my heart,” said Smallwood. “It’s great to be in a position to give something back to the community, and I’m committed to making this weekend not only about providing first-rate entertainment but also making a lasting social impact on the lives of local kids.”

Mayor Purzycki is inviting everyone to enjoy Wendell Smallwood Weekend in Wilmington, which will include these five events:

  • A Happy Hour Kick-Off event at DE.CO, located at 111 West 10th Street, on Friday, May 17 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The event is FREE but ticket for a VIP area at DE.CO are available for $30 each and will include two drinks, food, and access to NFL players.   • A Comedy Show at nearby Theatre N, 1007 North Orange Street, immediately following the Friday night Happy Hour Kick-Off.  The comedy show will feature HaHa Davis and Kleon Da Comedian. Davis (a.k.a. Mr. Big Fella) is a native of Detroit and has worked with Snoop Dogg and Chance the Rapper, while Kleon Da Comedian (Keith Kleon Norman) was born and raised in Baltimore and has performed in more than 29 cities across the United States. Doors open at 7:30 and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $60 and can be purchased here
  • The Wendell Smallwood and Mayor Mike Purzycki Pro Football Camp and Player Autograph Signing will take place on Saturday, May 18 at the 76ers Field House, located at 401 Garasches Lane. The camp is FREE and open to athletes ages 8 to 19. Camp registration and autograph signing will run from Noon until 1 p.m., with the Fundamental Skill Camp beginning at 1 and continuing until 4 p.m. The camp will include a free lunch, T-shirt and giveaways.   • Party with a Purpose on Saturday night at Docklands Riverfront, at 110 West Street on the Christina Riverfront. The party begins at 9:30 p.m. and runs until 1 a.m. Early-Bird admission is $40 and includes music and a fun atmosphere with Wendell and friends. Space is limited and a dress code prohibits the wearing of jeans or athletic gear. Purchase a ticket for the party here.
  • The Brunch Experience on Sunday May 19 at The Queen, located at 500 North Market Street, from Noon to 4 p.m. will bring Wendell Smallwood Weekend to a close. The brunch is a celebration of Wendell’s accomplishments and will feature DJ-inspired music as well as food and drink. The brunch will feature a check presentation to a local Wilmington nonprofit that provides programming for young people. General Admission tickets to the 21-and-over event are $60 each and can be purchased here. Space is limited and a dress code prohibits the wearing of jeans or athletic gear.

Wendell Smallwood was born in Wilmington on January 20, 1994. He played high school football at Red Lion Christian Academy in Bear before transferring to Eastern Christian Academy in Elkton, Maryland, for his senior year. He played college football at West Virginia and was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Since then, Smallwood has made a point of giving back to the Wilmington community, including initiating a “Christmas Give-A-Way” in December 2017.
