Continuation of Water Main Replacement Project along the Brandywine Results in Altered Traffic Patterns
Wilmington’s Department of Public Works announced today that, in a continuation of its project to replace two 1903 water mains that cross the Brandywine River, work is now underway to connect to water mains landside. On West Street between South Park Drive and 14th Street, the City will be replacing the old mains with two new 24-inch water mains, which will service all of downtown and sixty-five percent of Wilmington’s residents and businesses. This portion of the project is expected to take six weeks to complete but is highly weather dependent.
Work began yesterday, Thursday, July 25, and will resume on Monday, July 29. The hours will generally be 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with Saturdays substituting as rain days.
14th Street will be closed for the duration of the project; however, Public Works has re-engineered the project to allow for a small “alley lane” for local residents to use at their request. The alley will also provide an area for emergency vehicles. Parking for the duration of the project (day and night) will be in a special area on South Park Drive. Additional lighting will be provided to bolster safety on South Park Drive and the Wilmington Police Department will patrol the area frequently. Signage will direct both motorists and pedestrians around the work.
