Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki and Megan McGlinchey, Executive Director of the Riverfront Development Corporation (RDC), today announced that the RDC and the City have partnered again this year to present Wilmington’s official New Year’s Eve Celebration on the Christina Riverfront. The RDC and City welcome everyone to enjoy the 4th annual Family Fun Night, which will feature a fireworks show as well as a variety of food, drink and music offerings.

The Horizon Services Riverfront Rink will offer multiple skating sessions, including one during the fireworks show, and serve hot chocolate. Constitution Yards Beer Garden will be open and will serve food and drink specials all evening, and 93.7 WSTW Radio will broadcast live from 7 to 9 p.m. This year, the RDC is thrilled to include a live ice-sculpting demonstration at the rink, courtesy of Just Add Ice.  The demonstration will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. and will allow guests at the rink to view the creation of the sculpture and take photos.

The evening will culminate with an early New Year’s Eve fireworks show at 9 p.m., which will take place from the same location along the river as the City’s annual 4th of July event and previous New Years’ shows on the Riverfront. So, while the fireworks show can be seen from various locations along the Riverwalk, the ice rink will serve as a de facto viewing party, providing some of the best views of the action.

The RDC brought the annual New Year’s Eve celebration back to life in 2017 and the City was proud to join the effort as a co-sponsor.

“We are delighted to once again join our friends at the RDC and support this annual, family-friendly event,” said Mayor Purzycki.  “This is a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to come together in a fun-filled atmosphere to both reflect on a decade coming to a close while eagerly greeting a new year that we anticipate will bring hope, promise and happiness.”

“We are thrilled to bring back our New Year’s Eve celebration at the Horizon Riverfront Rink,” exclaimed RDC Executive Director Megan McGlinchey. “Several ice-skating sessions will be offered throughout the day, along with tasty treats and beverages for purchase, and then we ring in the new year with a spectacular fireworks show!”
