New Collection Days Become Effective Next Week
One week from today—Monday, January 13—will be the start of a new trash and recycling collection schedule in the City of Wilmington. Beginning next week, trash will be collected on Mondays east of Interstate 95 and Tuesdays west of I-95, while recyclables will be collected on Thursdays east of I-95 and Fridays west of the interstate. Wednesdays and Saturdays will remain as back-up collection days due to poor weather conditions and holidays. The City is switching collection days so that trash, especially heavily spoiled trash materials that accumulate from the weekend, can be collected and disposed of earlier in the week. The City is hoping the change will also refocus the public’s attention on properly disposing of trash, as well as on the importance of recycling as much material as possible.

Let’s Recycle More, Wilmington, Because It's Important Environmentally!
The City currently has a recycling diversion rate of approximately 16%, which could be greatly improved if residents took time to learn more about what materials can be recycled as explained by the Delaware Solid Waste Authority at this link to its website. It’s easy to recycle. Any City resident who does not currently have a maroon recycle bin, but would like to begin recycling, is asked to call the City’s Public Works Call Center at 302.576.3878 and request a bin.

New Trash Bins will be Delivered in March
To further encourage residents to place their trash inside a receptacle instead of on the street, which is illegal, the City will, beginning in March, distribute new gray-colored trash bins to the City’s 21,000 residential properties. The trash bins, which resemble the City’s maroon recycle bins except in color, are equipped with lift bars, making it easier and more efficient for the City’s sanitation crews to collect trash.

The Collection of Christmas Trees is Underway
The Department of Public Works is collecting discarded Christmas trees, on recycling days only, now through Friday, January 31, 2020. Residents should place their trees at the curb for collection minus any decorations, lights or tree stands. No artificial trees will be collected. Trees must be brought to the curb between 6 p.m. the day before collection and 4 a.m. the day of collection, but only on regularly scheduled recycling days. Also, there will be a Citywide tree collection event on Saturday, January 11 from 8 a.m. until noon.
