 Fan Giveaway FINAL

WILMINGTON, DE – Mayor John Carney and the Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services are helping Wilmington’s seniors stay cool this summer by distributing free electric fans beginning Tuesday, June 10 at 11:00 a.m.

Fans will be available each week, Tuesday through Thursday, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services, located on the 7th floor of the Louis L. Redding City/County Building, 800 N French Street.

Fans will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Because of rising temperatures, there will be an early day of Fan Giveaways starting this Friday, June 6, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

To receive a fan, residents must:

· Be 65 years of age or older.

· Live within Wilmington city limits (Wilmington proper).

· Present a valid state-issued ID showing age and city address.

· Not have received a free fan from the City of Wilmington in 2024.

Important safety reminder: Electric fans should not be used when outdoor temperatures rise above 95°F, as they can give a false sense of comfort and may increase the risk of heat-related illness.

Tips for staying safe during extreme heat:

  • Check on elderly neighbors, families with young children, and those living alone or with disabilities.
  • Never leave children, seniors, or pets inside a parked car, even for a few minutes.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing. If outside, use a wide-brimmed hat and take breaks in the shade.
  • Limit strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. Try early mornings or evenings instead.
  • Stay in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, such as libraries, malls, or community centers.
  • Know the signs of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If someone is experiencing symptoms, move them to a cool area and call 9-1-1 in emergencies.

This initiative is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable residents during the hot summer months.
