Mayor John Carney Proclaims June as Gun Violence Awareness Month in Wilmington

Post Date:06/06/2025 1:00 PM

WILMINGTON, DE – Surrounded by community leaders, advocates, and city residents, Mayor John Carney signed a proclamation officially declaring June 2025 as Gun Violence Awareness Month in the City of Wilmington.

The ceremony marked the city’s participation in the national “Wear Orange” Campaign. The color orange has become a powerful symbol of solidarity and a call to action against gun violence.

“Gun violence is not just a national problem, it’s a local one,” said Mayor Carney. “Every life taken or forever changed by a bullet represents a story that should have continued. This proclamation is more than symbolic. It’s a commitment to continue supporting policies, programs, and community partnerships that address the root causes of violence and promote peace in our neighborhoods.”

Mayor Carney made significant progress made during his time as Governor, including signing legislation that expanded background checks, raised the legal age to purchase assault weapons, and banned high-capacity magazines. But he emphasized that laws alone aren’t enough.

“The real work happens every day, in our homes, our schools, and our communities,” said Carney. “This month, I encourage every Wilmingtonian to take part in a vigil, support a violence prevention initiative, and talk to their children. Together, we can build a future where every life is valued and protected.”

"Gun Violence Awareness Month is a time to draw attention to the impact of gun violence in each of our communities, and to affirm our shared commitment to making change," said Wilmington Police Chief Campos. "While we have started this year with remarkable reductions in shooting incidents compared with years past, there remains much work to be done, and we appreciate all those who work alongside our first responders to combat gun violence and make our communities safer."

Representatives from Moms Demand Action were present to distribute resources and share opportunities for residents to get involved in ongoing efforts throughout June.
