WILMINGTON, Del. — Mayor John Carney, city officials, and community members gathered this morning to celebrate Pride Month with a special proclamation signing and the unveiling of a newly installed rainbow crosswalk at the intersection of 6th and Union Streets.

The event began with remarks from Mayor Carney at Crimson Moon, a local LGBTQIA+-affirming business, where he reflected on Wilmington’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all residents.

“This is not just paint on pavement — it’s a statement,” said Mayor Carney. “This crosswalk is a symbol of visibility and belonging. It reflects our promise that Wilmington is a place where everyone, regardless of who they are or who they love, should feel safe, seen, and supported.”

Following the remarks, Mayor Carney officially signed the City’s Pride Month Proclamation, recognizing the historical and ongoing contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals to Wilmington and beyond. The proclamation honors the legacy of the Stonewall Uprising and encourages participation in events that uplift and support LGBTQIA+ culture and equality.

As the final week of Pride Month unfolds, the mayor emphasized that Wilmington’s commitment to inclusion doesn’t end in June.

“This crosswalk serves as an ongoing reminder that the values of equity and respect are not confined to one month,” he said. “They are the foundation of the city we are working to build every day.”

After the signing, the mayor joined At-Large City Council Members Latisha Bracy and James Spadola, the Public Works Department, LGBTQIA+ leaders, and community advocates in painting the crosswalk in vibrant Pride colors, adding a symbol of celebration and allyship to the city’s streetscape.
