WILMINGTON – The Youth and Families Division of Wilmington’s Department of Parks and Recreation announced the launch of a Youth Entrepreneurship Business program. In partnership with I Am My Sister’s Keeper (MSK) and local business owner Antinette Watson, this program aims to help students learn about business operations and explore their entrepreneurial ambitions.

“This program provides the next generation with leadership skills and the tools to build something of their own,” said Mayor John Carney. "I'd like to thank all of the partners and guest speakers who will help to provide students with this important educational experience.”

“Parks and Recreation is thrilled to launch this youth entrepreneurship business program, which perfectly aligns with our mission to empower the next generation of leaders,” said Director Melody Philips. “Through our Youth and Families Career Development Program, we’re giving young people hands-on experience in business management and community impact that will shape their futures.”

The pilot program will be hosted at the MSK Community Center this fall, offering students ages 14 to 17 an opportunity to develop practical skills through interactive workshops and mentorship. Over the course of six to eight weeks, participants will engage in sessions led by local entrepreneurs, business professionals, and creatives, covering topics such as branding and personal identity, business planning, marketing and social media, e-commerce, and financial literacy.

“As a small business owner who started right here in Wilmington, it’s an honor to pour back into the next generation,” said Antinette Watson. I want young people to know that with vision, effort, and belief in themselves, their ideas and creativity can grow into something truly powerful.”

“We are thrilled to be a part of this collaboration with Parks and Recreation,” said Charlotte Miller-Lacy, Founder of MSK Community Center. “This is what true community looks like.”

Students will have the chance to put their new skills into practice through hands-on projects, business simulations, and field trips to local businesses. The program will culminate in a Youth Business Showcase, where participants can present their business ideas and celebrate their progress alongside family, mentors, and community leaders.

This program is part of an ongoing Youth Career Development initiative by Wilmington Parks and Recreation, including projects such as the Next Level Internship Program and the Aquatics Program.
