The Department of Land Use and Planning staffs and administers three public commissions that guide and oversee Wilmington’s development process:
- City Planning Commission (CPC) – Advises on land use policy, reviews waterfront and large scale development, subdivision and rezoning applications, annexation requests and recommendations for updates to the Comprehensive Plan.
- Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) – Hears requests for variances, special exceptions, and appeals related to zoning decisions.
- Design Review and Preservation Commission (DRPC) – Oversees architectural and historic review within Wilmington’s 12 Historic Districts and design review areas.
Together, these commissions ensure that Wilmington’s growth is balanced, transparent, community-informed, and consistent with the goals of Wilmington 2028.
