The Wilmington Police Department’s Community Engagement Unit (CEU) was established in 2023 by Chief Wilfredo Campos. This unit was created to help strengthen the relationship between our agency and the community, with police officers assigned to each of our nine districts to ensure coverage in each neighborhood and community.
Members of the Community Engagement Unit work to improve the quality of life in Wilmington by providing a more direct line of communication between the community and the police department. Police officers assigned to this unit have the following general responsibilities:
- Addressing and solving quality-of-life issues for City residents and businesses
- Building and strengthening relationships with the community, and enhancing trust between the community and the police department
- Attending community meetings and providing a direct line of communication between residents and the police department
- Reviewing crime statistics, special attentions and requests for police assistance to best address concerns
- Providing referrals to other agencies for individuals who have needs best addressed by non-law enforcement partners
- Initiating police activities to address community concerns, in coordination with other divisions and units
- Provide presentations to community groups on public safety strategies and tips
- Assisting with community events and initiatives, including monthly Community Resource Fairs and Coffee with a Cop events, and weekly Community Outreach Walks
Members of the Community Engagement Unit receive training in various areas, including substance abuse and mental health, and tools to assist with opioid addiction and overdose prevention.
